Dans l’Antiquité, la Sicile s’appelait Triquetra ou Trinacria. En effet, contrairement à la forme ronde classique de toutes les autres îles, la Sicile présente une configuration géographique étrange. Elle se caractérise par trois promontoires, Pachino, Peloro et Lilybaeum, et trois sommets qui rappellent presque instinctivement le triangle. Et c’est probablement à l’époque hellénistique que la culture grecque, pleine de dieux, de demi-dieux et de monstres mythologiques, a inventé le symbole de la gorgone avec trois pattes attachées directement à sa tête, l’associant peu à peu à notre terre et aux mystères qui l’enveloppent.
